ACCOUNTING FOR INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS AND GRANTS

ABSTRACT

The study aims to investigate (1) the role of accounting in managing international development projects and grants, (2) the challenges of financial reporting and compliance, and (3) the impact of accounting practices on the success and sustainability of development projects. A survey research design is justified to gather insights from accountants involved in international development finance. Using Taro Yamane's formula, a sample size of 320 respondents was selected, ensuring a robust and representative sample. The case study is conducted in Abuja, Nigeria, a key location for international development projects. The reliability coefficient score of the survey instrument is 0.89, indicating high reliability. Findings indicate that accounting is essential in ensuring the efficient management, transparency, and accountability of development projects and grants. Recommendations highlight the need for enhanced training in grant management and the adoption of comprehensive financial reporting frameworks to improve project outcomes and sustainability.
